As previously announced, Arlington County has selected American Disposal Services (ADS) as its new curbside collection contractor. ADS will assume full responsibility for trash, recycling, and organics collection beginning Monday, Aug. 3. This notice provides an update on the transition schedule, as well as information about a temporary rate adjustment to the Household Solid Waste Rate for customers.
We recognize that curbside collection service has not met the standard you deserve over the past year, and we apologize for the missed collections and inconsistency many customers have experienced. Selecting a new contractor reflects our commitment to restoring the dependable, predictable service Arlington County residents expect.
This transition is already underway and will happen in phases:
- Organics (already in effect): ADS has been collecting yard waste and food scraps since Mon., May 11.
- Recycling (begins June 29): Starting next Monday, ADS will also take over recycling collection.
- All Curbside Services (begins August 1): ADS will assume responsibility for trash collection and complete the transition to full curbside operations.
Your collection days and weekly schedule will not change at any point during this transition.
In recognition of the service disruptions many customers experienced with our current contractor, Arlington County will apply a one-time, $30 temporary rate adjustment to your Household Solid Waste Rate. This adjustment will be applied automatically to active residential accounts and will appear on your July, August, or September 2026 bill, depending on your billing cycle. No action is required on your part.

Reported missed collections provide the most accurate tracking of service issues and result in timely resolution.
