Why the device type matters:

Arlington has seen a recent increase in the use of electric mobility devices, like e-bikes and e-scooters. While we're happy to see more biking in the community, we're also seeing an uptick in crashes involving more powerful, faster e-moto devices, frequently involving youth. When choosing a vehicle for yourself or someone else, it's important to know the difference between e-bikes and e-motos:

  • E-motos can reach up to 65mph, they are generally not appropriate for a teen.
  • E-bikes typically have a maximum speed up to 20mph (some up to 28mph), they may be appropriatefor an older teen based on their level of training and experience.
  • E-bikes and e-motos are not suitable for children.

No matter what age you are using an e-bike or e-moto, make sure you are following traffic laws and we strongly suggest wearing a helmet.

How can I confidently choose an e-bike?

The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) has published an E-Bike Guide that offers helpful information when looking to purchase electric mobility devices. They also published a recent article about E-Bikes that offers information on what is and isn’t classified as an e-bike.
