Under Virginia law (Code of Virginia §§ 32.1-36 and 32.1-37, and 12VAC5-90-80 and 12VAC5-90-90), healthcare providers and labs must report anyone:

  1. With confirmed TB disease
  2. Presumed to have TB disease
  3. Diagnosed with latent TB infection (LTBI)

Report Active TB Disease

Report presumed or confirmed active TB cases to Arlington's Public Health Division immediately. Do not wait for lab confirmation (e.g., nucleic acid amplification (NAA) test or positive culture).

  • Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., call 703-228-7444
  • Nights and weekends, call 703-558-2222 and ask for the Public Health Duty Officer

Submit LTBI reports within 3 days of diagnosis using one of these methods:

  • Confidential morbidity report
    • Include evaluation and treatment details in the comments:
      • Chest imaging results and dates
      • Known risk factors (e.g., HIV, TNF-alpha antagonists)
