Senior Adult Council (SAC)

sac.pngThe Arlington Senior Adult Council (SAC) assists and advises the Office of 55+ Programs in carrying out its mission. That mission is to foster an environment that brings together senior adults in a positive atmosphere, encourages independence and well-being, and promotes the cultural richness of Arlington County.

Meeting Minutes

Action Plan for 2025-2026

SAC assists in the following area:

  1. Provide a forum for an interchange of ideas and information regarding the recreational, social and cultural needs and concerns of Arlington County senior adults, and work with the Office of 55+ Programs to determine ways and means of meeting those needs and concerns;
  2. Plan, sponsor, coordinate and provide leadership and related services for senior adult countywide activities and events managed by Senior Center Advisory Committees;
  3. Advise the Director of DPR, the 55+ program manager and other DPR officials (as appropriate) regarding senior adult program matters;
  4. Review periodic implementation reports prepared by the Office of 55+ Programs in response to various strategic planning initiatives.

 

ACTION PLAN FOR FALL 2025:

  • Develop flyer and campaign message;
  • Identify highest priority events to target;
  • Develop volunteer registry format for Winter Guide;
  • Identify tasks for new volunteers supporting AC’s and SAC;
  • Develop a 55+ Program session on SAC and AC for the Winter (maybe a panel discussion?)

How can I get more information on Senior Adult Council and 55+ Advisory Committees?

Please contact the Office of 55+ Programs (email 55Plus@arlingtonva.us) or visit one of the 55+ Centers to speak with a 55+ staff member. 

Roles & Duties

  • The Chair presides at all meetings of the Council and conduct Council business as necessary and appoints all committees - confirmed by a Council vote.
  • The Vice Chair assists the Chair in any and all duties and assumes the duties and powers of the Chair in their absence or incapacity.
  • The Secretary maintains permanent minutes and records of all meetings of the Council and presents these for approval at each meeting.  
  • The Treasurer shall be the custodian of the Council's funds, and involved with reconciling and securing of all funds in accordance with established bylaws.

What format are meetings held?

Currently, 55+ Advisory Committee meetings are held in person to allow for stronger partnerships and program brainstorming sessions.

How do I become a 55+ Travel leader?

Please contact the 55+ Travel office at ac55plustravel@arlingtonva.us or call 703-228-4747 to be connected to a travel staff member.

Travel Leaders are responsible for providing consistent and professional supervision of each 55+ trip. They must also act as an intermediary in situations with seniors and business staff. The leader should work to maintain the leadership role for the overall safety and security of all participants during trips. The travel leaders will assist with administrative duties, such as: making telephone calls to participants whenever necessary due to a schedule change, or when needing to gather additional information prior to a trip.

TIMEFRAME: Available at least one to two days per month to lead an assigned bus trip with an average of 4 to 8+ volunteer hours in a month.


55+ Travel Leaders Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Directly lead trips for the 55+ Travel program, establish a welcoming and safe environment, make appropriate adaptations for individuals requesting special accommodations, and assist travelers on each trip.

                    

  2. Provide evaluative information to Travel Supervisor for each trip - including feedback from evaluation forms available after each trip.  


  3. Obtain knowledge and adhere to established county program operations, policies and procedures -- information and training is provided.


  4. Help participants to become more socially engaged by encouraging them to interact with other travel participants and actively investigate other OSAP activities, programs and services that may interest them.


  5. Provide office assistance / trip research monthly as needed.
