About Independent Living
Independent living is a housing arrangement designed for older adults, generally at least age 55 and over.
- Most independent living residences have built-in programming and resources for older adults.
- Many have social service coordinators who assist residents with navigating public and private resources to help maintain their independence.
Independent living communities can also be referred to as retirement communities, senior housing, and senior apartments. As in regular housing, in-home services can be provided in independent living settings to help older adults maintain their independence. There is no state licensing or inspection body specific to independent living communities.
There are some privately owned and operated properties in Arlington that were acquired or renovated with public funds. As a result, they must set aside units specifically for households at various income levels. Some of these properties serve individuals 62 and older, including several communities listed below. Additional information is on the Housing Division’s Affordable Units web page. These complexes may have waiting lists, so we recommend calling before visiting.
