Starting the week of Aug. 3, temporary fencing will be installed around the building perimeter to support site safety. Soon after, work to replace the roof will begin.

Early Voting Reminders: There is no in-person voting at Madison during construction. However, the 24-hour Ballot Drop Box located outside the N. Stafford Street entrance remains open and available for voters who wish to return their completed mail ballots. Early voting is now available at Langston-Brown Community Center, where early voting has been temporarily relocated during this project, as well as two other locations.
About this Project
The County began a major maintenance project at Madison Community Center (3829 N. Stafford Street) on June 15, 2026 to ensure that it remains functional and safe. On May 16, 2026, the County Board awarded a $7.1M contract to The Matthews Group Inc. to provide construction services for this project, which include:
- Installation of a new HVAC system to replace the existing window air conditioning units.
- A new roof to address deterioration and leaking issues and to improve the building’s overall insulation and energy efficiency.
- Replacement of the single pane windows with all new windows, which are causing heat losses and energy inefficiencies.
- Installation of new ceiling tiles and lighting.
- Additional improvements to the lower-level fitness rooms and restrooms. See the key changes(JPG, 183KB) planned for the lower level.
The facility will be closed for approximately one year to expedite the work and for the safety of building users.

All other areas (Ballot Drop Box, Basketball Court, Dog Park, Fort Ethan Allen Park, Playground, Soccer Field) will be open with no planned changes. For your safety, please be mindful of the ongoing construction and obey all posted signage when visiting the site.
Funding
The FY25 – 34 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) included $4.7 million for the total renovation budget. The FY26 budget included an additional $2 million to complete facility improvements to the lower level as part of the baseline maintenance project, and to fund increased costs related to the electrification of the HVAC system.

What work is included in this project?
A new HVAC system and roof will be installed, and the windows, ceiling tiles, and lighting will be replaced throughout the entire building. Our team also added improvements on the lower level to the project scope, including expanding the fitness rooms, upgrading the flooring, and modernizing the restrooms. This project does not include other upgrades to the upper level, or the addition of showers/locker rooms and an indoor basketball court due to space and funding limitations.
During construction, will the parking lot and EV chargers be available?
Some areas of the parking lot will be used for construction staging and contractor parking, so any open parking spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis outside of construction hours. Street parking is encouraged.
Two EV chargers (#1, #2) will also remain accessible 24/7, except during any planned power outages for electrical work. All other EV chargers will be available outside of construction hours. View more information about charging at the County's EV charging stations.
Will Madison continue to be a glass recycling drop-off site?
The glass recycling bin will remain on-site; however, it has modified hours outside of construction work hours. It is open Monday - Friday, 4 p.m. - 6 a.m. and all day on weekends.
Please note that the dumpsters on-site should not be used for any public dumping. Learn more about the County's recycling, trash, and other related services.
Can buses continue to use the Madison parking lot as a bus stop?
Because some areas of the parking lot will be used for construction staging and contractor parking, the driveway in front of the community center will be closed to traffic. Buses are encouraged to use the ART 56 bus stop on N. Old Glebe Road as alternate location during construction.
What will happen with the programs typically offered at Madison?
Select programming will temporarily shift to other Department of Parks and Recreation community centers or may be put on pause due to space/equipment limitations. To view where programs will be moved during construction, visit the Madison Program Relocation webpage.
What other community center fitness centers are available for me to use while Madison is closed?
You can use any fitness center facilities at other community centers, with the exception of the Long Bridge Aquatic and Fitness Center due to its higher membership fees. A list of these fitness centers is available here.
Madison is a polling place. What does this mean for the upcoming elections?
Effective June 1, 2026, the Precinct 135 polling site and the early voting location have been temporarily relocated while Madison Community Center is closed for renovation. The Election Day polling location is temporarily relocated to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (4250 N. Glebe Road) and the early voting location has temporarily relocated to Langston Brown Community Center (2121 N. Culpeper St.).
How does this project relate to the long-term planning study listed in the Capital Improvement Plan?
The FY25 – 34 CIP included $250,000 to support a building analysis to identify improvements within the existing building envelope to better serve current uses. The long-term planning study is expected to begin following the completion of the maintenance project, and will be guided by lessons learned during that project. There will be an Involve level of public engagement as part of this planning study.
