Zoning Division

The Zoning Division regulates land use by ensuring that the Zoning Ordinance is administered fairly. The Zoning Ordinance classifies all land in Arlington County and regulates development on it. In the Zoning Division, teams under the Zoning Administrator provide permitting, planning and enforcement functions.

Inspection Services Division

The Inspection Services Division (ISD) stays involved throughout the project. At the start, ISD reviews certain plans and permit applications. At various milestones during construction, ISD performs required inspections. After construction is complete, ISD ensures the structure’s maintenance and proper use.

Department of Environmental Services

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) maintains Arlington’s water and sewer systems, removes trash and recycling, provides transportation services, and protects Arlington’s natural and built environments. DES also issues certain permits necessary for building projects.
