Permit Arlington - Access the Customer Portal

If you’ve encountered a problem with Permit Arlington, it may be listed as a known issue below. Expand each of the categories below to view issues, as well as information about workarounds and estimated resolution dates. To assist you, we have compiled Step-by-Step Processes for the most common requests we are receiving.

Permits Submitted Before June 23

For permits submitted before June 23, customers may not be able to submit revisions to rejected plans.

Permits submitted before June 23 may have some missing fields that would normally be printed on permits and/or placards.

  • Workaround: Permit and placard may be printed. New permits will be provided once the issue is resolved. Customers may also contact PermitTechSupport@arlingtonva.us for possible expedited updated permit or placard.
  • Estimated resolution date: TBD

Issuance of some permits submitted before June 23 may be delayed while staff reviews fees for accuracy.

  • Workaround: Permits will be issued, but may take slightly longer than usual until the issue is resolved.  
  • Estimated resolution date: TBD

For building permits submitted prior to June 23, customers may see a BWIZ record listed on their “My Records” list; this is an internal system record that should be ignored.

  • Workaround:  Ignore. Updates are in progress to remove these system records from the list.
  • Estimated Resolution: July 22 COB

Customers may not be notified of scheduled inspections for permits submitted prior to June 23 that did not previously include an email address.

  • Workaround: Customers can look up the assigned inspector and the status of their inspection by following the steps on the building and trades inspection page.
  • Estimated resolution date: Not applicable

 

Specific Permit/Inspection Issues

New electrical, fire, mechanical, and plumbing permits have incorrect fees.

  • Workaround: Permits are being issued if fees are less than the correct amount. Staff will contact customers at a later date to collect the remaining balance.
  • Estimated resolution date: TBD 

Resolved Issues

Resolved: Customers attempting to create an account and/or reset their password were seeing an error message and unable to complete the action.

  • This issue is resolved 

Resolved: When submitting revisions to approved permits by clicking the “amendment” link and following the application steps, the revision record is created, however, the user may see an error message upon submission. 

  • This issue is resolved 

Resolved: When providing updated Contractor information, customers are not presented with the Licensed Professional page to update the information.

  • This issue is resolved.

Resolved: After a permit is rejected, a comment letter is not attached to the notification email.

  • This issue is resolved.
  • FYI: The notification email now includes a link to directly access the comment letter. 
  • If you have not received the link to your Comment Letter in your Review Results notification for your Building or Trade permit (notification recieved before the fix was implemented), you may view your comment letter directly by going to this URL and entering your project ID (for example RNEW-00012):

Follow these steps to access the comment letter after a rejection.

  • For older permits, it will be the project ID, such as CTBO-12345 or ELEC-12345. For permits submitted in the new system, this will be the permit number / record ID such as ELEC22-12345 or RNEW22-12345. 

Follow these steps to access your permit online after payment.

  • Log into the Permit Arlington customer portal and search for the permit number in the upper right corner
  • Click on the permit number
  • Click on “Record Info”
  • Click on “Attachments"
  • You should see a file named "permit" 
  • If you do not see the permit after payment, please wait for a response from the technical support team.

Follow these steps to access your approved plan set online. Please note that plan creation is taking 3-4 days due to known technical difficulties.

  • Log into the Permit Arlington customer portal and search for the permit number in the upper right corner
  • Click on the permit number.
  • Click on “Plan Review"
  • Click on “Approved Documents" to view the approved plan set 

Follow these steps to check status during plan review

  • Log in to the Permit Arlington customer portal
  • Search for the permit number in the upper right corner
  • Click on the permit number
  • Click on "Plan Review"
  • Click on "Review Results & Mark Ups"
  • Click on "Review Status & History"
  • The due date for the current step, the assigned reviewers, and the results will be visible here.
  • Note: There are multiple steps in the process (completeness check, plan review, and final review), and the due dates and assigned reviewers will change as the permit goes through each step. 

If you had an ePlan account and are logging into Permit Arlington for the first time, follow these steps to find your existing projects.

  • If you are prompted to change your password and it is not recognized, try typing your password in ALL CAPS.
  • To view your existing projects, log in to Permit Arlington and hover over the Home menu in the upper left corner and choose My Records.

I created a Permit Arlington account – where are my projects?
  • Once you've logged into your account, hover over Home in the upper-left corner, and select My Records from the drop-down menu. 

If I had an ePlan account, will I be able to use the same username and password for Permit Arlington?

  • Yes. If you do not already have a Permit Arlington Account, we will create a Permit Arlington account with the same user name and email address you used to create your ePlan account, and once you log in, you will be prompted to change your password.

What do I do if I had an ePlan account and a Permit Arlington account before June 28? 

  • If the email and user ID for both accounts match, continue to access your Permit Arlington account with your existing credentials. You will have access your building, trade, and LDA permits that started in ePlan.
  • If your user ID matches for both accounts, but not your email address – you will receive an email with instructions to create a new Permit Arlington account.

Which system should I use to access my building, trade, and LDA permits?

  • As of June 28, use Permit Arlington. 

Can my organization have a group account that is accessible by multiple people?

  • Yes. This is a great way to manage an account that needs to be accessed by multiple people. 
  • When registering for an account, you’ll be presented with the option to register as an “Individual” or an “Organization”. Choose the “Organization” option.
