WIC Helps Arlington Families With Breastfeeding

Many parents want to breastfeed their babies, but it can be challenging. Going back to work, worries about milk supply, or a lack of support can make it hard to continue.

National WIC Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7. During the week, Arlington’s Women Infants and Children (WIC) program is highlighting resources for pregnant and breastfeeding families.

“Breastfeeding has health benefits for both babies and parents,” said Therese Panagis, Arlington WIC Program Supervisor. “The right support can make breastfeeding easier.”

WIC, part of Arlington's Department of Human Services, helps families with breastfeeding. Eligible families can borrow hospital-grade breast pumps. They may also get one-on-one help from expert lactation and peer counselors.

Support from People Who Understand

Breastfeeding peer counselors have training and experience breastfeeding their own children. They meet one-on-one with parents to answer questions and offer support. They can also connect families with other services when needed.

More Food and More Resources

WIC participants who choose to breastfeed get additional healthy food. These foods include canned fish and extra fresh fruit and vegetable benefits. Healthy food directly influences breastmilk quality, nutrient composition, and energy levels.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies have only breast milk for the first six months. Around six months, babies can start solid foods. Breastfeeding can continue for two years or longer if the parent and child want to.
