Age Friendly Arlington and Elder Readiness Plan

Arlington’s Age Friendly Journey

In May 2018, Arlington joined the network of Age-Friendly Communities through the World Health Organization and AARP Age-Friendly Communities. The  Commission on Aging and Agency on Aging led the effort for Arlington to receive designation as an Age-friendly. An age-friendly community is welcoming and inclusive for all ages. It encourages people to stay healthy and active at every age and provides services and supports to those who need assistance to remain safe and independent in their communities. Age-friendly communities ensure inclusion of older people in activities and create opportunities to connect older adults to issues that are important to them. They reduce social isolation, increase community engagement, and address social determinants of health such as equity, access to health care, safety, and social supports. The Action plan provides the foundational structure for what matters to older adults in our community.

Elder Readiness Task Force

As the population ages, the number of elders in Arlington will more than double. The County Board charged the Elder Readiness Task Force in 2006 with assessing County readiness to meet the changing needs of a growing elder population. The Elder Readiness Plan is a blueprint for an inclusive, livable community that will be ready to meet the increased needs of the elder population expected over the next 25 years.
