Traffic Signal Upgrades

About the Project

Many of the existing traffic signals in the County have exceeded their intended service life. This ongoing initiative reconstructs outdated traffic signals to meet current Federal and County standards and specifications. Each Signal upgrade project implements the latest technologies such as accessible pedestrian signals, CCTV for monitoring, video detection, and better intersection lighting to improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility for all road users.

Locations

Transportation Engineers consider a variety of factors when prioritizing signal upgrade locations, including the type of signal, age of the infrastructure, and the type of roadway facilities impacted. Each signal upgrade requires a design phase and a construction phase.

Funding

This project is funded by a variety of sources including County funds, Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) funds, and other sources of revenue. The project is administered locally by Arlington County staff.

Audible Pedestrian Signal (APS) Retrofits

These requests for modification of an existing traffic signal to install Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) have been found feasible and approved for construction. Requests for retrofitting existing signals can be made through Report-A-Problem, Virginia Department of the Blind and Visually Impaired, or through the County's Disability Advisory Commission (DAC) Coordinator.
