South Carlin Springs Road & 5th Road South Sidewalk and Signal Project
StatusConstruction
Construction is expected to begin in late summer of 2025, and be completed in spring of 2026.
Construction Updates - Summer 2025
Construction will begin at the project site in late August or early September. During construction, crosswalks and lanes will close for signal and crossings work, and the sidewalk on the east side of South Carlin Springs Road between 5th Road South and 5th Street South will close for sidewalk upgrades.
About the Project
This project will upgrade the current signals, provide wider curb ramps, and mark high visibility crosswalks. Due to the existing configuration of the signal at the 5th Rd/St S intersection, the full extent of improvements will be reached after the signal upgrade.
This project is a component of South Carlin Springs Pedestrian Safety Improvement project.
Project Goals
- Replace the current signals on wires with mast arms
- Widen sidewalks to 6 feet and add a 2-foot grass buffer between the sidewalk and travel lanes
- Mark high visibility crosswalks
Project Background
The signal project is one of several Arlington County projects and initiatives to improve safety and access on South Carlin Springs Road between Arlington Boulevard and Columbia Pike.
About the Process
Community Engagement ahead of the signal project was conducted as the South Carlin Springs Pedestrian Improvements initiative.
Funding
