Parking Repaving in front of Arlington Village Shopping Center
From Sept. 15 to Oct. 10, crews will be rebuilding the asphalt parking area between South Cleveland Street and South Barton Street. Sidewalks and walk areas will remain open. Utilities have been buried and crews have moved on to road surface, sidewalk, and concrete work. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2025.
Travel Impacts - Summer 2025
Crews are reconstructing curbs, lanes, and utilities along Columbia Pike. Proceed with care and follow all signs and detours.
Bus stop temporary relocations:
- South Walter Reed Drive both directions: Relocated to South Highland Street
- South Barton Street eastbound: Relocated 100 west in front of Celtic House
- South Barton Street westbound: Relocated 200 east in front of Starbucks
- South Courthouse Road eastbound: Relocated across South Courthouse Road in front of Dorchester Apartments.
- South Courthouse Road westbound: Relocated across South Courthouse Road to South Veitch Street

South Cleveland Street to South Barton Street
Starting September 15, crews will fully rebuild the parking area the front of Arlington Village shopping plaza, and the length of South Barton Street adjacent to the plaza. This work will last about four weeks and is expected to be completed by October 10.
During this time, only the asphalted areas will close, and sidewalks and the bus stop will remain open. The back parking lot will remain open and accessible from South Cleveland Street. The parking lot behind 2400 Columbia Pike next door will remain open and accessible from Columbia Pike while the South Barton Street driveway is blocked.
Expect noise, dust, and the smell of asphalt during this work period.
After the parking area is rebuilt, crews will reconstruct the west sidewalk on South Barton Street, between the front and back driveways into the Arlington Village plaza.
Work Zone and Sidewalk Access
South Edgewood Street to South Cleveland Street
- South sidewalk between South Edgewood Street and South Cleveland Street is closed for reconstruction
- The right hand eastbound traffic lane is closed to provide pedestrian detour
- Pedestrian access maintained to retail establishments with Columbia Pike frontage (2700 Columbia Pike to be accessible from parking lot in the back of the building)

- Sidewalk closed for sidewalk work on west side of S. Edgewood St.
At South Walter Reed Drive
- Sidewalks are narrowed to allow for continuing sidewalk work an signal pole installation.
- The Columbia Pike eastbound and westbound bus stops have been relocated to South Highland Street.
Permitted Work Hours:
Sunday-Saturday, 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM (except Federal holidays)
Residents should expect to see and hear dust, mud, noise, debris, and temporary traffic and parking restrictions. In locations where parking will be prohibited during work, "No Parking" signs will be posted.
About the Project
This work is part of the Columbia Pike Multimodal project that will make Columbia Pike a safer, more accessible route for all users. Arlington is transforming this main thoroughfare into a complete street that balances all modes of travel and supports high-quality, high-frequency transit service.
In addition to visible improvements to the road, extensive work will occur below the roadway to replace aging and leak-prone water and sewer pipes.
Streetscape improvements will include:
- Sidewalk upgrades, including widening where space is available, and leveling
- New streetlights
- Upgraded traffic signals
- Street trees

Public Process
During the planning phase with this project, staff met with adjacent property owners civic associations to discuss the Columbia Pike Multimodal Project and provide construction updates. Outreach will continue as the project moves forward.
