The Gateway Park Master Plan and Design Guidelines were adopted by the Arlington County Board in December 2024. With the planning phase now complete, the project is moving into final design and engineering to prepare the park for construction.

Gateway Park

About the Project

Gateway Park is located in the heart of Rosslyn and serves the community in many ways—whether through programmed events, visits to the dog park, casual gathering spaces, or as a connection to the Mount Vernon Trail. The adopted Master Plan sets a long-term vision for transforming the park into a welcoming, accessible, and active public space.

Key features of the Master Plan include:

  • A reimagined central lawn and flexible event spaces
  • Updated dog park and garden areas
  • Improved pedestrian access and safer connections within Rosslyn
  • Enhanced tree canopy, native plantings, and stormwater management
  • New play areas, seating areas, and opportunities for public art

With this vision approved, the County is now working on detailed design and engineering to bring the plan to life.

What Comes Next
As the final design process advances, there will be focused opportunities for the community to provide input on specific elements that were not fully defined in the Master Plan—such as material selections, social spaces activation, planting details, and certain site furnishings. These engagement opportunities will help refine the design while maintaining the overall vision adopted by the County Board.

Project Background

The Realize Rosslyn Sector Plan, adopted in 2015, calls for a Park Master Plan and Design Guidelines to redesign the park.

Spring 2024 - Feedback on Existing Conditions and Use

Level of Engagement: Involve

From April 11 to May 3, 2024, community members provided input on their vision for the Gateway Park project. Approximately 700 community members participated in the first engagement across in-person events and an online feedback form. The feedback received helped staff develop three draft concepts for the park.

You can find key themes from the first engagement opportunity here.

Summer 2024 - Feedback on Draft Concepts

Level of Engagement: Involve

From June 25 to July 26, 2024, staff requested community feedback on three draft concept designs for Gateway Park. In total, over 700 community members participated in the engagement between an in-person open house event, multiple pop-ups in the Rosslyn area, and the online feedback form.

You can find the outcomes and key themes from the second engagement in this summary.

Fall 2024 - Final Draft Design Feedback

Level of Engagement: Consult

From October 1 to October 20, 2024, staff solicited feedback on a final draft design concept for Gateway Park. 213 community members provided their thoughts via an online feedback form, which staff will use to finalize the design before the County Board considers the proposed concept.

You can find a summary of the comments heard and key themes from the third engagement here.
