Project Background Undersized and poor condition Military Road culvert

The existing culverts that carry Gulf Branch stream under Military Road have reached the end of their useful life and are in need of replacement.  The culverts are also undersized for the location and in larger storms, Gulf Branch stream overflows the top of the culvert.   The new culvert will be an open span arch design to better allow flow through the culvert.  The culvert replacement project aims to provide a long-term solution for the nearby residents and visitors to the Gulf Branch Nature Center, improving quality of life and reducing the risk of flood damage to properties. Furthermore, the project will contribute to the overall health and sustainability of the Gulf Branch watershed.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodplains are also being analyzed to ensure the most effective flood mitigation strategies are implemented.

Project Tasks

  • Replace the existing double barrel concrete culvert (60” diameter) with a single proposed precast concrete arch culvert.
  • Stabilize the surrounding areas affected by construction to minimize environmental impact and ensure a safe environment for residents and visitors to the Nature Center.
