Arlington County is currently recruiting for several opportunities for temporary seasonal employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. This includes recruitment for instructors and/or coaching staff in the popular and growing Gymnastics programThis announcement is specific to teaching or coaching for the Gymnastics program only. If you are interested in other teaching positions you must apply for those positions as well.

Arlington County Gymnastics is looking for reliable, enthusiastic, positive people who can work with children of all ages. Our successful, well-established program offers gymnastics to both boys and girls starting from parent tot classes through preschool and level classes. Specialty classes include camps, birthday parties, special events, cheerleading, teens, adapted, and adults. Arlington Gymnastics also offers girls USAG Xcel competitive team and USAG Junior Olympic competitive team (boys and girls). Prior gymnastics experience a plus. Arlington Gymnastics will help train the right candidates and certify in safety, and professional memberships. These programs are located at Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center: near Shirlington and I-395. Currently our program is looking for people experienced in any of the following areas:

  • Girls Junior Olympic Competitive Team
  • Girls Xcel Competitive Team
  • Boys Competitive Team
  • Adapted Gymnastics (participants with disabilities)
  • Recreational Classes (preschool, youth and adult)
  • Instructors needed for weekday evenings and weekends (both Saturday and Sunday)

Positions include:

Recreation Instructor I

This position is typically assigned to beginner-level classes, or classes where less technical expertise is required to effectively instruct class participants. Participant age may play a factor in determining the appropriate level of Recreation Instructor. Employees in this classification typically have limited instructional experience, despite having experience in the area of expertise.

Recreation Instructor II 

This position is typically assigned intermediate, or single-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are moderately complex. Participant age may play a factor in determining the appropriate level of Recreation Instructor.

Recreation Instructor III

This position is typically assigned advanced-level classes. Concepts taught throughout the course are complex. This position may also be assigned to teach therapeutic recreation courses or sections specifically designed for participants with disabilities. Subject matter taught may necessitate additional safety considerations by the instructor. Recreation Instructor III positions are expected to have the knowledge and ability to serve as a substitute instructor for many other classes within the general area of expertise.

Selection Criteria: 

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:·Considerable technical knowledge of assigned subject matter.

  • Ability to effectively teach individuals and groups.
  • Interpersonal skills to speak in public.
  • Writing skills to compose letters and narrative reports.
  • Reading comprehension to read standard business English.
  • Problem solving skill to apply standard procedures to clearly defined problems.
  • Arithmetic skills to add, subtract, multiply, or divide numbers of 3 digits or more.

Education and Experience:

Education: Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate or the equivalent.

1200 hours of technical experience in field related to assignment, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.

Substitution:

Additional education may be substituted for experience, or additional responsible experience may be substituted for education. Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • Previous involvement in a competitive gymnastics program.
  • Current or previous gymnastics instruction through coaching or teaching.
  • Ability to work with or experience and skills working with children of all ages.

Work Hours:

Weekday and weekends, employees may not work more that 40 hours per week.

All work hours are completed at Barcroft Sports & Fitness Center located in Arlington County, Virginia.  Main work location is 4200 S. Four Mile Run Dr. Arlington, VA.
