Trail Pavement Condition
During late summer 2022, Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation employed the expertise of a pavement condition contractor to assess the pavement condition of the County’s off-street, multi-use trails. The pavement condition of asphalt, concrete, and pavers on major trails in the Department of Parks and Recreation portfolio were assessed. The trails were inspected for pavement distresses, which were used to calculate pavement scores for each trail segment. The procedure follows the standards established by ASTM International, which established the standard for determining a pavement condition index.
The trails assessed included the Arlington Boulevard Trail, Bluemont Junction Trail, Custis Trail, Donaldson Run Trail, Fillmore Trail, Four Mile Run Trail, Lucky Run Trail, Route 110 Trail and Washington Boulevard Trail. Trails owned and maintained by others were not assessed. These include the Mount Vernon Trail and the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (W&OD Trail).
The trail system is in overall good condition with an average Pavement Condition Index (PCI) score of 78. The trail pavement condition assessment has already been used to mill and repave pavement segments rated as Poor condition as well as other segments to improve the overall Pavement Condition Index of Arlington’s trails.
The table below shows the range of PCI values corresponding to each rating.
