Amazon Connect FAQs

What is Amazon Connect and how does it work?

Amazon Connect is a cloud-based contact center service that allows residents to connect with the Arlington County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) for non-emergency inquiries. When a caller dials (703) 558-2222 for non-emergency needs, Amazon Connect will answer the call and provide verbal assistance. It will provide a faster and more efficient response to non-emergency inquiries. Alternate languages will be built out in the future.

When will Amazon Connect be available?

The system will begin answering non-emergency calls starting on June 1, 2023. The County will run a pilot for 30 days, where Amazon Connect will collect data to understand the most common reasons people call the non-emergency phone number. The County will use that data to build AI programming to meet those needs best.

What happens at the end of the pilot?

Use of the Amazon Connect system is expected to continue after the pilot ends. The County will use pilot data to best tailor the Amazon Connect system going forward.

Is my personal information stored or shared with Amazon?

Personal information is not stored or shared with Amazon or the County.

Can I use Amazon Connect to report an emergency?

No. Amazon Connect is only for non-emergency calls like car towing inquiries, animal control needs, or noise complaints. For emergencies, always call 9-1-1.

Can Amazon Connect answer my call in my preferred language?

It can understand your native language but cannot yet speak it. The ability to communicate in other languages is a functionality that will be added in the near future. Until then, callers should speak in their native language. They will then be transferred to a 9-1-1 telecommunicator to assist.

Will Amazon Connect replace the current 9-1-1 system?

No, Amazon Connect is only for non-emergency calls. The current 9-1-1 system will continue to handle emergency calls. If you dial the non-emergency number, (703) 558-2222, but have an emergency, please hang up and dial 9-1-1.
