100th Anniversary of the Arlington County Civic Federation

HISTORIC 100TH ANNIVERSARY–ARLINGTON COUNTY CIVIC FEDERATION

April 1916 to April 2016

WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation, established in April 1916 as the civic voice of Arlington by a coalition of six local civic associations, is the oldest countywide organization in Arlington and now has grown to include 80 member organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation’s primary purpose is to work towards civic improvement of Arlington County and to serve as a sounding board for all citizens on matters of civic interest regardless of political or partisan affiliation; and

WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation has a long history of partnering with County government to address issues in the community, such as supporting a municipal water system to better protect the community from fires, helping to develop an organized street naming system, assisting with land use planning and advocating for affordable housing and environmental issues; and

WHEREAS, the Arlington County Civic Federation supports equal rights for all Virginians and has been vital in making Arlington a diverse and inclusive world-class community; and

WHEREAS, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Arlington County Civic Federation efforts to improve the Arlington Community and foster “The Arlington Way”;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Libby Garvey, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim April 2016, as the month of the

100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARLINGTON COUNTY CIVIC FEDERATION

in Arlington and urge all residents to celebrate the anniversary of this important community organization and to let this event inspire them to assume active roles of civic responsibility for the betterment of our community and society at large.
