The cooler weather signals the arrival of fall and winter, complete with fewer hours of light than darkness.

Daylight Saving Time ended early on Sunday, Nov. 2, leading to an hour of darker conditions during the evening commute time. Pedestrian crashes are 20% more likely in the darker months, so it’s important to be extra vigilant while traveling.

Keep safety in mind when traveling around Arlington, whether driving, biking, scootering or walking to usual destinations or a packed calendar of seasonal activities. Here are a few tips on how to travel safely this fall and winter:

  • Be Alert: Always be on the lookout for people crossing the road as you drive.
  • Go the Speed Limit: Slower speeds increase driver reaction time and reduce crash risk.
  • Be Predictable and Visible: When crossing the road as a pedestrian or on a bike/scooter, use a crosswalk for better visibility.
  • Drive Sober: It is illegal to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol (or drugs).
