Media Alert: Arlington County Launches Summer Camp for Teen Girls to

Arlington County hosts a new, one-of-a-kind summer camp this month for teen girls ages 13-17 to explore careers and leadership roles in the emergency management profession.

Produced by the County's Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the week-long "HERricane Arlington" camp will offer hands-on learning in the areas of incident management, natural hazards, public health, communications and public speaking, all-hazards preparedness and leadership skills such as teamwork and ethics.

The goal is to inspire the next generation of firefighters, meteorologists, epidemiologists and county managers - particularly young women who often account for a small percentage of emergency management professionals.

Registration for the camp is now full and closed.

What:

• Week-long camp activities including training with fire-fighting equipment, CPR, creating meals from emergency kits and a "Capstone" scavenger hunt incident exercise.

Who:

• In addition to Arlington OEM staff, a range of guest instructors will take part from organizations including the Red Cross, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Urban Alliance and the Arlington chapter of Awesome Women Entrepreneurs. Twenty-five campers are registered for the week.

• Monday, June 26 through Friday, June 30
