About the Project
This project is part of the Sanitary Sewer System Improvements and the Water Main Replacement programs (Water Sewer Maintenance Capital), which are included in the Utilities portion of the FY 2025-2034 CIP. Sufficient funds are available in the Utility Construction Fund to provide for construction of this project. See descriptions and the photo gallery on this page for details on the proposed work.
Sanitary Sewer Installation
During large storm events, backups have been reported at several residences along North Lexington Street. The project will provide a second sanitary sewer line along North Lexington Street, eliminating backup issues experienced by residents upstream. The additional 12-inch diameter sanitary sewer line, which will be installed between 9th Street North and Wilson Boulevard along North Lexington Street and through the Bon Air Park parking lot, will help to protect these residences in the event of major storms.
Water Main Replacement
The project will replace the existing 6-inch diameter watermain along North Lexington Street with a larger, 8-inch diameter water main. The upsized water main will increase capacity and will replace the approximately 85-year old pipe with new pipe.
Project Process
Project has reached substantial completion as of January 2026.
Traffic flow will be maintained throughout the project duration. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be placed along North Lexington Street a minimum of two days before enforcement begins and the area must be cleared of all vehicles. Residents who use street parking can move their vehicles to the Bon Air Park parking lot during work hours. Failure to remove a vehicle will result in it being towed. Please call the Arlington County Police Department at 703-558-2222 regarding towed vehicles.
While there will be work in the parking lot of the Bon Air Park, the parking lot will remain open and impacts within the lot will be minimized as much as possible while maintaining the maximum number of parking spaces allowable. Impacts to the Bon Air Park Rose Garden parking lot will be coordinated with Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. Please see the photo gallery on this webpage for an exhibit of the maintenance of traffic plan.
The contractor will limit noise-generating work to the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No weekend work is anticipated. Other tasks may be addressed during the hours immediately before and after that window.
There will be water service disruptions to customers throughout the project when water service is transferred from the old main to the new main, and when the new main is connected to the water system. Service transfer disruptions should not last more than two hours. Disruptions due to main connections should not last more than 8 hours. Advance notice will be given to residents prior to any planned water shutoffs.
Please note that several tasks will follow once construction activities from these two phases is finished, including site restoration, final cleanup and inspection, and demobilization of the worksite.
Project Timeline
A detailed letter about the project and construction schedule was sent to the presidents of the nearby civic associations and distributed to residents who will be directly impacted by the project on Sept. 30, 2025. See "Project Process" above for dates.
