The elevator has been installed and is open for service.
About the Project
This project added a second street-level elevator to the west side of South Hayes Street at 12th Street South, near the existing escalator. The new elevator will increase accessibility to the Metro station from the west side of the intersection.
Project Goals
- Improve accessibility from street level to mezzanine
- Provide additional point of access and remove need to cross six lanes of traffic to use east elevator
Project Background
In 2010 the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) completed a feasibility study of adding an elevator to integrate with planed streetscape enhancements in the vicinity.
