Project Location

North Oak Street between Clarendon Boulevard and 17th Street North in the Rosslyn neighborhood.

Project Status

The project is developing plans to build out the interim sidewalk on western side of N Oak Street from Clarendon Boulevard to 17th Street N and upgrade curb ramps to ensure compliance with current standards.

About the Project

  • Install sidewalk on the west side of N Oak Street from Clarendon to 17th Street N.
  • Rebuild the existing sidewalk on the east side to create an easier slope.
  • Upgrade curb ramps to ensure ADA compliance.

Project Goals

Improve pedestrian safety and accessibility by:

  • Constructing a continuous, accessible sidewalk on the west side by replacing the existing temporary walkway with a permanent pedestrian facility.
  • Rebuilding and regrading the existing sidewalk on the east side to meet accessibility standards by reducing slows that currently exceed 2%.
  • Installing new ADA-compliant curb ramps.
  • Encourage safer vehicle speeds and increase visibility between people walking and driving by building curb extensions.

Project Timeline

Vision Zero N. Oak Street Walkability Pilot Project (Spring 2021)

Engagement level: Involve

In spring of 2021, the County piloted temporary barriers on N. Oak Street to provide a walking path for pedestrians where there was previously no sidewalk.

  • Data and community feedback collected indicated that this project improved safety metrics and increased feelings of safety among respondents.
  • The pilot recommendation was to construct a sidewalk, and this capital project has been funded to build out the interim safety treatment.
