CCBN - Options Explored

In order to develop a recommendation, County staff evaluated existing traffic conditions on Crystal City streets and roadway standards and constraints. We also reviewed planned capital improvements and private development in the project area.

Staff considered the following options for reconfiguring streets in order to improve bicycle facilities:

  1. Northbound and southbound bike lanes on Crystal Drive (similar to existing conditions)
  2. Two-way cycle track on the east side of Crystal Drive
  3. Two-way cycle track on the west side of Crystal Drive
Concept 1: Northbound and southbound bike lanes on Crystal Drive

While this option is feasible within the four-year implementation timeline, it was not recommended because it would not address the bike lane blocking and safety issues present on Crystal Drive today.

Concept 2: Two-way cycle track on the east side of Crystal Drive

This option included separated/protected bicycle facilities in both directions of Crystal Drive. The bike facilities would be on the east side of the street, where there are fewer conflicts with driveways.

It was determined this could not be delivered in the four-year implementation timeline because it would be affected by the County’s plan to extend the transitway north on Crystal Drive. This concept also requires substantial capital improvements to the roadway to make it work, and would result in the loss of on-street parking on Crystal Drive.

Concept 3: Two-way cycle track on the west side of Crystal Drive

This option included separated and protected bicycle facilities in both directions of Crystal Drive, on the west side of the street.

It was determined this could not be delivered in the four-year implementation timeline because of impacts to the commercial streetscape on Crystal Drive. It would create conflicts at intersections and would result in the loss of parking on Crystal Drive. Substantial capital improvements would be required to make this concept work.
