Construction Updates

March 2023

Construction on the County side of Segment A between South Orme Street and South Oak Street is expected to start no sooner than the week of March 20, 2023. Impacts to travel will include lane reductions, turn restrictions, detours, and night work. Information will be shared as it is confirmed.

January 2023

On the week of January 23, Columbia Pike will close between South Oak Street and South Joyce Street, to accommodate construction on the federal project. This closure will remain in place until approximately fall of 2025.

  • All traffic will detour through the new South Nash Street and Southgate Road
  • The Air Force Memorial bus stop will close and service will move to a temporary stop on Southgate Road

Further details about detours will be shared as they are developed.

The closure is expected to last about a year and a half and be completed in 2025. During this time, the Federal Highway Administration will realign Columbia Pike and build a tunnel for the Arlington National Cemetery expansion. Visit the USDOT project page for project information and contacts.

December 2022

From Dec. 8 to the first week of January, Southgate Road will flow in one direction on each side of the median between South Oak Street and South Joyce Street. Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained on the sidewalk along the north boundary wall. Bike and pedestrian access will continue through South Joyce Street construction to Army Navy Drive via a temporary path on the east side of South Joyce Street, which connects to the sidewalk under the I-395 overpass.

Starting the first week of January, until approximately the week of Jan. 23, vehicular traffic will flow in both directions on the westbound lane, and the eastbound lane will be closed. Sidewalk access will be maintained along the northern boundary wall.

At the end of January, Columbia Pike will close between South Oak Street and South Joyce Street. All vehicular traffic will reroute to the new South Nash Street and Southgate Road. More information will be shared as it is determined.
