Planning

The County is developing a master plan for Drew Park to guide improvements and its long-term vision. Once the plan is complete, design and construction will follow in future phases.

About the Project

Arlington County is expanding Drew Park along South Kenmore Street to create a larger, more connected community space. The expanded park will unite the existing park land with land acquired from the YMCA, Arlington Public Schools, and former duplex sites. These areas will form one cohesive community space and park.

Through this master planning process, the County and community will work together to:

  • Assess existing amenities and explore new public space uses.
  • Improve safe pedestrian access into and through the park.
  • Address changes in elevation across the site.
  • Create pedestrian-friendly connections to the surrounding neighborhood.

Project Background

In 2009, Arlington County began acquiring parcels along South Kenmore Street to expand Drew Park. The expanded site now includes several former private lots, a YMCA-donated parcel, and approximately two acres exchanged with Arlington Public Schools.

The duplex at 2400–2402 South Kenmore Street, which was acquired as part of the expansion, was demolished in August 2025 to make way for future park improvements.

Funding for the Drew Park Master Plan was included in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025–2034 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), which allocated $1.82 million for construction out of an overall $2.24 million project budget.

Over the next several months, the County will work with the community to develop a plan that reflects local priorities and helps shape Drew Park as a welcoming, accessible, and vibrant neighborhood destination.

July 2026 Update

On July 21, 2026, the County Board adopted the FY 2027-2036 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) which includes additional funding for a pavilion-style restroom at Drew Park.As a result of this update, the new project budget for the Drew Park Master Planning Process is $4.175m.

Fall 2025 - Feedback on Existing Conditions and Use

Level of Engagement: Involve

During the first engagement staff solicited community feedback at a community open house and an online feedback form. Staff read every comment and are working with the consultant team to develop 2-3 draft concept designs for Drew Park. These designs, as well as how community input informed their development, will be shared with the community for more feedback in Spring 2026.

Spring 2026 - Feedback on Draft Concepts

Level of Engagement: Involve

The project team hosted a community meeting on April 15 at Drew Elementary where we presented three draft concepts for Drew Park and solicited feedback on each design. The team also collected community feedback through an online questionnaire, which closed on May 10.

Staff read every comment and are now working to synthesize community feedback to incorporate into the final draft design, which will be shared in Summer 2026.

You can review the online feedback heard during this phase of community engagement by accessing the following resource:

Summer 2026 - Final Draft Concept Feedback

Level of Engagement: Consult

Over the past few months, project staff have worked to develop a final draft concept for Drew Park that was informed by community feedback. Thank you to everyone who participated during this process, we are very appreciative of your time and thoughtful comments.

Our Drew Park online feedback form features a project video that will walk you through this process and the amenities included in the final concept plan. Once you've watched the video, please weigh in and let us know whether the design meets your needs. The form will remain open for community responses through September 8.
