Construction on the Arlington Child Care Center began in April with interior demolition work. The renovation is expected to be completed in early 2024. Work hours for this project are 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
About the Project
The County owns a 3,284 square foot detached one-level building, located on a 15,828 square foot parcel at 1915 N. Uhle St. For many years, this facility had been used for child day care services for infants to four-year-olds of Arlington County employees. It has not been renovated since 1990 and has experienced an array of repairs.
On Dec. 17, 2022, the County Board approved a $1.1 million contract with Landivar & Associates for construction services. The facility is now closed for an interior renovation, with limited exterior improvements for ADA compliance. Work includes renovations of the children’s rooms, teachers’ areas, restrooms, and the kitchenette; window replacement; HVAC system upgrades; and overall accessibility upgrades.
In early 2024, construction is expected to conclude and the facility will reopen. Enrollment preference will be given to children whose parent or guardian work for the County, followed by children whose parent or guardian work or live in Arlington County. On Jan. 21, 2023, the County Board approved a deed of lease with the national, non-profit child-care provider Easter Seals to operate the day care facility when it reopens.
What to Expect
Residents and travelers through the area may see a change in parking availability near the site. In addition, the following activities will occur during the construction process:
- Some construction noise during the working period
- Trucks with building material at the front of the site
- Selective deconstruction and removal, using dumpsters
- Exterior windows and doors replacement, equipment and plumbing work
- Site landscaping
We will make every effort to protect the safety of the community and minimize inconveniences during this time. For your safety, please stay outside of the existing property fence and obey all signage around the site.
