A project to install Battery Electric Bus charging infrastructure at the ART Operations and Maintenance Facility began in March 2025 and is expected to be complete in summer 2026.

About the Project

The Arlington Transit (ART) Operations and Maintenance Facility (AOMF) opened in December 2024 and serves as ART's permanent home for heavy maintenance and operations. The facility was designed to accommodate 61 ART buses, with the capacity to charge up to 47 battery electric buses (BEBs) on the site.

This project will install the electrical infrastructure capable of providing charging capacity for up to 47 BEB charging stalls as part of the County's commitment to sustainable public transportation. At the beginning of this project, a solar canopy was installed on the top level of the parking garage, bringing the total number of solar panels on this facility to 817 -- the most solar panels installed on any County-owned building.

ART purchased its first four BEBs in August 2023 as part of a pilot to evaluate new technologies within ART operations while maintaining current reliable levels of service. Seventy-eight Compressed Natural Gas buses compose ART’s current fleet. The purchase of zero-emission buses and mobile chargers underscores Arlington's noted commitment to becoming a carbon neutral community by 2050.
