Welcome to Arlington!

Thank you for contacting the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue.

We noticed that your vehicle appears to be regularly parked/garaged in Arlington County, and we want to make sure you are aware of your responsibility to register your vehicle with our office.  Even vehicles with out of state license plates or leased vehicles must register and pay, after registering with the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles

Arlington County Code §14.2-69 provides that residents must register their vehicle or trailer within thirty (30) days of being garaged or parked in the County or within thirty (30) days of purchasing a vehicle that will be garaged or parked in the County.  Arlington County Code §27-11.1 requires vehicles and trailers to be listed for property taxes within sixty (60) days of the vehicle first being garaged or parked in the County.

The easiest and most efficient way to register your account is to create an on-line account in our Customer Access Payment Portal (CAPP).

Why does the Commissioner of Revenue assess vehicle personal property tax?

One of the roles of the Arlington County Commissioner of Revenue (COR) includes discovering and assessing all vehicles regularly parked or garaged in Arlington County.

I lease my vehicle. Am I responsible for the vehicle personal property tax or is the leasing company?

Yes, leased vehicles need to be registered with our office for taxation. The leasing company, as the legal owner, is responsible for the taxes, however you should refer to your lease agreement or contact your leasing company regarding your liability.

How do I register my vehicle for personal property taxes?

Be sure to register your vehicle with the Virginia DMV first and then with the Arlington County Office of the Commissioner of Revenue.  Visit here for more information.

Can I register in Arlington but keep my license plates from another state?

Per Virginia Code § 46.2-603, you are required to register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency. If you elect to maintain your out of state (non-Virginia) license plates, in addition to property taxes based on your vehicle's value, you will also be liable for a $100 Out of State license fee.

Can I register my vehicle over the phone if I receive a case letter?

No. Please contact our office to speak to one of our Vehicle Personal Property Compliance Tax Specialists at 703-228-4017 or email compliance@arlingtonva.us.

I am an active-duty military member. Am I liable to pay Arlington County taxes?

If you are an active-duty member of the United States military and you have a legal residence outside of Virginia, you and/or your spouse, may be exempt from Arlington County personal property taxes.  However, you are still required to register with the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue for taxation.  For additional information visit Active Duty Military Personal Property Tax Exemption.

I am a full-time student but have a permanent address in another state. Am I liable to pay Arlington County taxes?

If you are a full-time student with a vehicle registered in a state that has personal property taxes, you may be exempt from Arlington County personal property taxes.  However, the vehicle owner is not exempted from the out-of-state license tax of $100, if the vehicle is garaged in Arlington for more than six months out of the year, or if the student is attending school outside of Virginia.

I'll be living in Arlington temporarily but my car is registered to my permanent address in another state. Do I still need to register my vehicle?

Any vehicle displaying out-of-state plates while garaged in Arlington must be registered with Arlington County and the owner is responsible for the $100 out-of-state license tax.

If you have specific questions related to your situation, we are happy to help you.  Please send us an e-mail at compliance@arlingtonva.us or call one of Vehicle Personal Property Compliance Tax Specialists at 703-228-4017.
