Dog Licenses

Per Virginia Code § 3.2-6524 and § 3.2-6521Arlington residents with dogs over four months old must obtain a dog license and vaccinate their dog against rabies. Arlington County does require residents to license service dogs, but there is no licensing fee for service dogs.

If you no longer own a dog that had a registered County dog license, email our Customer Service team or call 703-228-4000.

As of July 1, 2019, new dog licenses are valid for the life of your pet and will not need to be renewed as long as you maintain your pet’s active rabies vaccination. The cost of this lifetime dog license is $30.00. See below for instructions on how to apply for a lifetime license.

How to Apply for a Dog License

Online

To access the online form, simply log into your Customer Assessment and Payment Portal (CAPP) profile and click the “I Want To” tab. Then, click “Apply for a Dog License” and continue from there.

To apply without logging in, go to CAPP and under “Get Started,” click the “Apply for a Dog License” link, and continue from there.

Note: Either way, you will need to attach/upload your current rabies vaccination certificate. Upon completion of the application, you will be prompted to submit your $30 payment; you can pay by e-check, credit card, or debit card.

Please allow 3-5 business days for us to process your completed application.
