This page contains information about collecting and sharing energy benchmarking data for buildings that would like to share benchmarking data voluntarily. 

Steps for collecting and sharing benchmarking data  

  1. Confirm access to existing ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account or establish a new account.
  2. (Optional) Share your ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager account with Arlington County through the Portfolio Manager portal.*
  3. Collect monthly whole-building data from all energy sources on an ongoing basis. Note that in order to receive an ENERGY STAR score, you must enter at least 12 consecutive calendar months of energy data
  4.  Upload monthly whole-building utility data to Portfolio Manager on an ongoing basis.

*Sharing data with Arlington is voluntary. Data provides the County with insight on building energy performance and helps us direct resources for improving energy efficiency. The County does not share this data publicly; however, information submitted through an Arlington County Government website may be considered a Public Record under the Virginia Public Records Act and may be subject to release by the County in response to a request made under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager Overview 

U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool helps you measure and track the energy and water usage, waste and materials, and greenhouse gas emissions of your buildings, all in a secure online environment.

How to Request Energy Data from Utilities 

The energy utilities that serve Northern Virginia can provide aggregated energy use data to account for whole-building usage, without needing to collect data from each building tenant. Building owners or managers in Arlington County can request aggregated energy use data from Dominion Energy and Washington Gas.  

  • Washington Gas provides “automated” benchmarking. With the permission of the property owner, they will automatically pull aggregated gas usage data into the Portfolio Manager reporting platform.  

  • Dominion Energy does not support an automated benchmarking system established, but they will provide aggregated data which property managers can then enter in Portfolio Manager manually.
