Understand Permitting Requirements

Many energy upgrades will require a permit to carry out the work. Permits ensure a project meets safety, health, zoning and environmental standards. Permits also provide a legal record of activity that may affect property sale and insurance claims, among other implications.

Permit Arlington is Arlington County’s online permitting system. You can learn about Permit Arlington and how to get started here.

The most common types of permits for energy upgrades are included below. Click on the links to learn more about Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing/Gas, and Solar Permits. Depending on your project, you may need additional permits, which you can identify in the Permit List. If you are unsure whether a permit is required, contact the Inspection Services Division by email or phone: 703-228-3800.

If you have a contractor perform work, Arlington strongly suggests that the contractor is identified on the permit application as the permit holder. When contractors are the permit holder, they’re indicating their responsibility for the work. If your contractor applies for the permit, the property owner must complete the Property Owner Consent Form.
