Heat Water with a Heat Pump Water Heater

Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) are an efficient water heating solution and can save energy and money, especially when replacing an electric water heater. HPWHs are powered by electricity to transfer heat from the air to the water tank. They are sometimes referred to as hybrid water heaters, because they include electric resistance elements for backup water heating.

A qualified contractor can help you select and properly install a HPWH, as they have several specific requirements:

  • Most HPWHs require a 240V outlet, which may require adding a new electric circuit if switching from a gas water heater. Many manufacturers are starting to offer 120V HPWHs, which can utilize an existing outlet.
  • HPWHs produce condensation and need to connect to a drain. HPWHs require sufficient air and ventilation to operate efficiently. If the unit is in a closet, you may need to add vents or louvered doors.
