ONSITE: '94 Sculpture Project

These installations were part of Arlington County’s 1994 ONSITE: Sculpture Project exhibition, a temporary sculpture project. 
Funded by Arlington Cultural Affairs and The Charles E. Smith Company.   


Three Installations

Three-Installations-by-Knottyhead Artist: Knottyhead (Rudy Mendez, Pamela Burress, David Clay)
Materials: Bamboo, clay, sand, natural found materials, nylon strips, terra cotta tiles, metal pit drums 
Location: Lubber Run Park, 200 N. Columbus St.   

Three Installations was created with bamboo and clay sculptures, sand paintings, and primitive musical instruments. The artists suspended bright banners, masks, and chimes on trees between the sites. Designed to change with exposure to weather, the artists conceived this piece as “non-denominational shrines” that emphasize the natural beauty of the park. 

 


Awakening

Awakening by Marc Robarge was in the shape of a giant with a mirror-tiled eye inside a bark-covered cone.  

 


Spirit House

Spirit House by Wendy Ross Artist: Wendy Ross
Materials: Polypropylene rope, thatched rye straw, wood, tubing
Location: Rosslyn Gateway Park, 1300 Langston Blvd.

Spirit House was inspired by the artist’s travels through Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim and road-side shrines she saw there. Ross worked with a master thatcher from England who helped fabricate the roof with indigenous rye straw.
