Location: The Cadence Community Room, Arlington, VA
Date: April-November 2024
Residency Description: The 2024 IMPACT Arts program was developed jointly with Arlington Public Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (MoCA Arlington), and Wesley Housing to serve the residents of The Cadence, an affordable housing community owned and operated by Wesley Housing on Arlington Boulevard. The Cadence hosted six community sessions led by artist-in-residence Lianna Zaragoza, who collaborated with community members to create a mural that takes inspiration from the landscape visible through the windows in this community space and the parks and other natural spaces throughout Arlington County.
Growing Together: The Forest of Us is the culmination of Zaragoza’s participation in the 2024 IMPACT Arts Residency. The mural is installed in The Cadence Community Room and was unveiled to the community on November 16, 2024.
Zaragoza’s practice transfigures natural pigments ground from soil, rocks, and charcoal mixed with house paint into site-responsive artworks that examine the intersection of geologic, cultural, and temporal conditions which humans have relied upon for generations to build their communities and sense of belonging.
