Weekly Percent of Emergency Department Visits from Respiratory Illnesses - COVID-19, Flu (influenza) and RSV

 

In October 2025, the data source for monitoring weekly respiratory illnesses activity in emergency departments (ED) changed:

  • Due to its inactivity since September 2025, the CDC Respiratory Illness Data Channel was discontinued as the data source.
    • It reported our regional ED activity by combining visits for Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
  • Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Respiratory Illnesses Dashboard data is the current data source used to monitor weekly ED visits activity and includes:
    • Region/District-specific weekly ED visit trends for COVID-19, Flu, and RSV
    • Summary weekly respiratory illness activity trends for all Northern Region Health Districts (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William)
    • Detailed data table on weekly percent of respiratory illness ED Visits and weekly number of respiratory illness ED visits, by each district/region.

    Note: VDH data suppression rules apply - weekly results with events that are not zero but less than five (1-4 events) are not included; Counts of 1-4 events are blank cells in the weekly results data table.
