Implement Conservation Measures Due to Reduced Supply of Baxter International Inc.
Intravenous (IV) and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Solutions

October 9, 2024

Dear Colleague:

On October 8, 2024 the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) State Health Commissioner requested all healthcare providers to immediately implement actions to conserve supplies of intravenous (IV) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions (See VDH Clinician Letter, 10/8/2024)

These temporary conservation measures are recommended due the reduced IV and PD solution supplies reported by Baxter International Inc. (North Cove facility in Marion, North Carolina), a major supplier of IV and PD solutions that has sustained storm damage from Hurricane Helene.

Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is requesting all health care providers to immediately implement temporary conservation measures to mitigate the potential impacts of this manufacturing disruption of IV and PD solutions.

More information on the recommended temporary conservation measures and the products impacted are provided below:

This is a rapidly evolving situation, and this information is subject to change. Virginia Department of Health continues to work closely with the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association (VHHA), and coordinate with Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR), Quality Insights Renal Network, Virginia’s EMS Councils, and other health care organizations to closely monitor this situation and will provide clinician updates as soon as available.

Thank you for all you do to control and prevent the spread of communicable diseases in our community.

Sincerely,

Reuben K. Varghese, MD, MPH

Health Director & Director, Public Health Division
