Increase In Gastrointestinal (GI) Illnesses Associated with Lake Anna
Around Memorial Day Weekend

Dear Provider,

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is investigating a cluster of gastrointestinal (GI) illnesses in people who were in the Lake Anna area over Memorial Day weekend, May 24-27, 2024 (Attachment 1. VDH Regional Press Release, June 6, 2024). Some of the ill people have been diagnosed with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections. Potential water and foodborne exposure sources are being investigated.

STEC infection causes stomach cramps and diarrhea (often watery or bloody). Symptoms can also include vomiting, fever, and chills. In severe cases, the infection can damage organs, such as the kidneys, and lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

Arlington County Public Health Division (ACPHD) and VDH recommend you take the following steps:

• Maintain a low threshold to test for E. coli in any person with diarrheal disease who was at Lake Anna on or after Memorial Day weekend (on or after May 24, 2024).
• Report any suspected cases of STEC or hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) to ACPHD.
• ACPHD will arrange for testing through the public health laboratory for individuals who are still symptomatic.
  • Call Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM, at 703-228-5200, option #1;
  • On Nights and weekends, call 703-558-2222 and ask for the Public Health Duty Officer.
• Note: Clinicians treating a patient with suspected STEC should be aware that administering antimicrobial agents may increase the risk of HUS.
