Septic System Program

Arlington Public Health makes sure septic systems (also called onsite sewage systems) are safe and follow local laws. These systems treat wastewater on your property instead of sending it to a public sewer. Although most homes in Arlington use public sewer, about 34 homes rely on septic systems, and it's important to keep those systems working properly to protect health and the environment.

What We Do

  • Help residents understand Arlington County Code, Chapter 61 (Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance)
  • Work with Fairfax County to:
    • Make sure septic systems are installed and maintained properly
    • Investigate complaints about broken or leaking systems
    • Refer residents to Fairfax County for repair permits

Why It Matters

If a septic system isn’t working right, it can leak sewage into yards, creeks, or ditches. This can harm people, pets, and the environment.

Keep Your System Working

Alternative Systems

If your home uses an Alternative Onsite Sewage System, it must be:

  • Inspected within 180 days of approval
  • Inspected every year
  • Sampled every 5 years
  • Fairfax County has a list of contractors.
