Hugs of Hope at ACSO

ARLINGTON, Va., April 1, 2025 – The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the rebranding of its cherished family-focused visitation program as “Hugs of Hope”—a name that reflects the warmth, healing, and spirit of these events, which are designed to bring together incarcerated parents and their children during meaningful times of the year.
Hosted around major holidays such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and during the various seasons, Hugs of Hope events allow children to reconnect with their parents in a safe, nurturing environment that doesn't feel like a jail. The initiative is rooted in the belief that incarceration should not sever the bonds of love and trust between parent and child.
“It is important to me that families stay connected, because incarceration affects families, and children should know they are loved regardless of their loved one’s situation,” said Sheriff Jose Quiroz. “Hugs of Hope is intentional in its meaning, and I hope these events foster love and encourage connections that will support the children and our community.”
The new Hugs of Hope logo was designed to symbolize the earth, unity, and open-hearted connection. The figures appear ready to embrace, just as the program embraces the idea that compassion and accountability can coexist.
“This program is one of the most special things we do at the Detention Facility,” said Ms. Kristen Cane, Arlington Detention Facility Program Coordinator. “To witness a child run into their parent’s arms, to hear laughter where there’s usually silence—those moments remind everyone here why rehabilitation and dignity matter.”
