The Arlington County Sheriff’s Office’s Medical Services Division is a vital component of the Detention Facility’s operations, led by Chief Medical Director Dr. Richard Malish, M.D. This division is responsible for delivering comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare to individuals in custody, ensuring both their physical and behavioral health needs are met with professionalism, dignity, and care. In partnership with the Arlington County Department of Human Services (DHS) Jail Mental Health Team, the division provides coordinated medical and mental health services that support overall well-being and continuity of care.

On November 3, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office assumed operational control of the Detention Facility’s medical care and healthcare mission, marking a historic transition from a privately contracted model to one led by county-employed professionals. This shift reflects Sheriff José Quiroz’s commitment to enhancing medical services through a model that is accountable, experienced, and forward-thinking. Under this structure, the medical team includes dedicated county staff, comprised of leadership, nurses, and administrative personnel, all reporting through the Chief Medical Director directly to the Sheriff. This alignment ensures that medical operations reflect county standards, ethics, and values, while maintaining flexibility through supplemental contracted staffing when needed.

The Medical Services Division plays a critical role in supporting the overall safety, stability, and rehabilitation efforts within the facility. Its work is closely integrated with facility operations and contributes to the Sheriff’s Office’s longstanding commitment to excellence.
