Arlington Public Health Helps Keep Fair Food Safe
Published on August 03, 2026
Heading to the Arlington County Fair for funnel cakes, fried Oreos, and fresh-cut fries? Arlington Public Health is already at work behind the scenes—making sure every bite is safe before the first order is served. That work isn’t always visible to fairgoers and families, but it starts with careful inspections of every food vendor on site.
What Inspectors Check
Before vendors can open, Arlington County Public Health—part of the Department of Human Services—sends inspectors to each food truck, stand, and tent. They make sure vendors can safely prepare and serve food.
Inspectors look at a few key things:
- Food temperature (hot and cold foods kept safe)
- Food protected from contamination
- Clean water supply
- Handwashing stations
- Clean tools and work areas
- Food workers safely handling food
These steps help prevent foodborne illness and keep fairgoers safe. Vendors must meet these requirements before they can operate.
“Before the fair opens, we check that each vendor is set up to follow food safety rules,” said Candice Wooden, Environmental Health Supervisor.
Many vendors operate out of food trucks that already have Arlington County health permits, while others set up temporary tents or booths that can take more time to inspect.
“Temporary setups can be harder to manage,” Wooden said. “We check closely to make sure food stays protected and equipment is used safely.”
Even though the fair is temporary, the rules don’t change. Vendors still have to follow the same food safety standards as restaurants.
Speak Up if Something Looks Off
Arlington Public Health asks fairgoers to speak up if something doesn’t seem right.
“If you see a problem, tell fair staff while you’re there,” Wooden said. “Reporting concerns right away helps us respond quickly and keep everyone safe.”
You can also report food-related concerns directly to Arlington Public Health at 703-228-7444 (option 4).
With these protections in place, you can enjoy the food, rides, and entertainment at the Arlington County Fair with confidence. See you at the fair!
