This National Adult Day Services Week (September 20–26), Arlington County is celebrating 50 years of the Adult Day Program.

Since opening in October 1976, the program has helped older adults and adults with disabilities stay active and engaged. It also gives families and caregivers the support they need.

A Legacy of Service

The Arlington Adult Day Program was the first adult day program in Virginia and one of the first in the United States.

The program opened as Madison Adult Day Care at the Madison Community Center. It later moved to the Walter Reed Community Center, where it still serves community members today. The name may have changed over the years, but the goal has stayed the same: helping people stay independent for as long as possible.

The program began with the vision of Dr. Helen M. Hackman. Dr. Hackman helped bring adult day services to Arlington when few communities offered them. Today, a multidisciplinary team continues her work by supporting participants and caregivers. The program has also grown over the years through new partnerships, caregiver programs, and Memory Cafés.

Helping Participants Thrive

Each participant has different interests and needs. The program provides personalized support to help each person get the most out of their day. Participants can make friends, stay active, create art, enjoy music, and take part in special events, nature walks, and other activities. The goal is to help people remain independent and continue doing what matters most to them.

Supporting Caregivers

The program also supports family members and caregivers. By providing daytime care, the program gives caregivers time to work, run errands, or take a break. It also connects them with information and other resources.

Celebrating Creativity During National Adult Day Services Week

This year's National Adult Day Services Week is especially meaningful because the program is celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the Arlington Adult Day Program is hosting an Art Gala featuring artwork created by participants. The event is a special opportunity for participants, families, and caregivers to come together and celebrate this milestone. Attendees will also enjoy performances from Arts for the Aging.

The People Behind the Program

This anniversary is also a chance to thank the people who have made the Arlington Adult Day Program what it is today. From committed staff to caring families, many people have helped shape the program. Volunteers have also played an important role by spending time with participants and helping with activities.

Looking Ahead

Fifty years after opening its doors, the Arlington Adult Day Program continues to make a difference.
