Man Sentenced in Fatal GW Parkway DUI Crash
January 20, 2026, ARLINGTON, VA: Last week the Circuit Court sentenced Carlos Hernandez Romero to 8 years of active incarceration, 5 years of probation, substance use and mental health treatment, and ordered to participate in a series of victim impact panels. Mr. Hernandez Romero pled guilty to aggravated DWI manslaughter in October 2025 for causing the death of Lyfe Gates, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and community leader on January 1, 2025.
Hernandez Romero, while unlicensed, was driving the wrong way on the George Washington Parkway while heavily intoxicated — with a blood alcohol concentration above .20 and cocaine in his system — when he struck Ms. Gates’ vehicle head-on at approximately 80 mph, killing Ms. Gates and her dog.
In his sentencing argument, Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Abhi Mehta emphasized that the combination of extreme intoxication, high-speed driving, and entering a one-way highway in the wrong direction made the tragedy a predictable and preventable outcome. He highlighted the lasting emotional toll on victims’ families and the impossibility of fully capturing a lost life through any sentencing number. He also read to the Court several victim impact statements drafted by Ms. Gates’ family. Ms. Gates’ mother and son testified to the loss their family has endured. Ms. Gates, described by her family as “the glue” who held multiple generations together, was known for her generosity, leadership, and unwavering care for others. Her death has left a profound and ongoing void for her children, grandchildren, siblings, and extended community. Mr. Hernandez Ramero expressed remorse to Ms. Gates family for his actions and taking her life.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti said, “Ms. Gates’ family has remained steadfast and strong throughout the process, for which we are so grateful. It is important to remember who it is the family and community has lost, and to honor them in every way we can.”
