Arlington 2050: Envisioning Tomorrow Together

The Arlington 2050 Initiative was announced by Chair Garvey at the Arlington County Board’s January 2024 Organizational meeting and is a year-long effort to engage neighbors across Arlington on what the County should look like by the year 2050 and what challenges the County, and its residents, must address. Beyond initiating and sustaining a dialogue, this initiative seeks to distill community feedback into 2 to 3 distinct visions of the future, which can serve as the basis or a foundation for long-term strategic planning.

Green Valley Neighborhood Stories & "Postcards from the Future" Pop-Up (rescheduling due to weather)
Grill master and community-builder Antone Jacobs has invited us to set up our postcard pop-up shop at his Green Valley food truck, BBQ at its Best. Antone has personally lived much of the incredible story of Green Valley—and before he starts cooking, he'll give us a taste of it with some firsthand history from this rapidly-changing neighborhood. Schedule:
  • 10-11am: Green Valley history with Antone
  • 11am (as Antone sets up for lunch): Arlington 2050 "emergent strategy" jam— share your ideas for the future-focused pop-ups and community-building events you'd like to help make happen!
  • 12-2pm "Postcards from the Future" Pop-Up and BBQ picnic: As folks queue up for BBQ, start some conversations and invite residents to share their hopes for the future of Arlington via postcard or voicemail. Stay as long as you can/as long as you like! (Try the ribs.) Depending on foot traffic, some of us may split off to get an early start at the County Fair.

On the Horizon/In the Works:

  • Columbia Pike Movie Night Postcard Pop-Up
  • Place-based Learning Partnership with Arlington Public Schools (Teachers: fill out our educator interest form to learn more!)
  • Hispanic Day Celebration (September 7th)
  • English Learners Postcard & Conversation Pop-Up
