Climate Action Plan

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Climate Action Plan is replacing the Community Energy Plan, building on its existing elements while updating and expanding the scope. The Climate Action Plan project is currently underway with target completion set for late Winter 2027/2028.

The time for climate action is now.

Arlington County is already experiencing the effects of climate change with increased extreme storms, devastating floods and heat waves that threaten residents, businesses, visitors, and our natural and built environment. Addressing this crisis requires bold and comprehensive action through climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience – efforts that are interconnected and essential to confronting the challenges ahead.

Guided by the Arlington County (PDF, 68KB)Climate Action Resolution(PDF, 136KB), the County is developing a Climate Action Plan that will outline pathways to cost-effectively and equitably expedite its carbon neutrality goal and strengthen community resilience, prioritizing system-wide climate solutions that support environmental, economic, and social well-being.

Project Background

The project will update and expand the scope of the 2019 Community Energy Plan to develop a new, comprehensive Climate Action Plan. The Climate Action Plan will be informed by robust and inclusive public engagement, using a whole-of-community approach to review current programs, projects and plans. This review will help identify existing goals, policies, and actions that address climate change, focusing on mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.

This work will establish a baseline to conduct a gap analysis. This analysis will identify the missing goals, policies, and actions needed to develop the long-term Climate Action Plan.
