Mental Illness in Employment & Housing: Overcoming Stigma

Thursday, April 9, 2015

Central Library, Main Auditorium

“Every year, about 42.5 million American adults (or 18.2 percent of the total adult population in the United States) suffer from some mental illness, enduring conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia…”

Mental impairments are among those conditions protected by the American with Disabilities Act of 1990, and fall into a “protected class” category for purposes of employment and housing.  These conditions include, but are not limited to, people who suffer from a range of diagnosis such as Anxiety and Mood Disorders, Schizophrenia, Autism and Suicidal thoughts or actions.  Many people are diagnosed with, and suffer from, more than one of these conditions.

Stigmatizing views held by employers and housing officials make it difficult for people with mental disabilities to enter the competitive workforce or to find safe, affordable housing options.

Panelists will share their thoughts and expertise, as well as highlight resources available to Arlington residents faced with the complex issues related to cognitive disabilities or mental illness:

  • Jose Campos, Program Manager, Job Avenue
  • Bethany Lilly, Policy Attorney, The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law
  • Clare Miller, Director, Partnership for Workplace Mental Health, American Psychiatric Foundation
  • Theresa Nguyen, LCSW, Director of Policy & Programming, Mental Health America
