File a Discrimination Complaint

The Human Rights Commission receives, investigates and conciliates complaints from those who believe they have been victims of unlawful discrimination. This is a free public service. The Commission can investigate complaint of discrimination that have occurred in Arlington County within the last 180 days.

In Arlington County, it is unlawful to discriminate because of

• race
• color
• national origin
• sex
• sexual orientation
• gender identity
• disability
• age (over 40)
• religion
• marital status
• familial status (being pregnant or having children under the age of 18)
• retaliation for opposing a discriminatory practice

The Commission takes discrimination complaints in the areas of:

• employment
• housing
• commercial real estate
• public accommodations
• credit
• education

The Commission usually resolves complaints itself, however, if necessary, the Commission can enforce its decisions in court.
