Police Department Publishes 2024 Annual Report
Published on June 03, 2025
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Police Department is proud to announce the publication of the 2024 Annual Report. The report details many of the significant accomplishments achieved throughout the year in support of our department’s key initiatives of Crime Prevention and Control, Community Engagement, Transportation Safety and Employee Wellness and Safety. This report also summarizes annual crime and crash statistics and provides an overview of multi-year trends in both categories.
“The success of the Arlington County Police Department is a direct reflection of our exceptionally dedicated sworn and professional staff,” said Chief Andy Penn. “The Annual Report reflects many of the ways our personnel work each day to make a positive impact in the lives of those who live, work and visit Arlington as they prevent and solve crime, maintain transportation safety and build meaningful relationships within the community. We also recognize the importance of supporting those who serve and protect Arlington and remain committed to investing in officer training, career development and their wellness and safety.”
2024 Crime Statistics Overview
The Annual Report is the official release of crime and crash statistics by the police department for the preceding year. Year-end crime statistics are submitted to Virginia State Police in March, based upon the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) format. Investigative updates, as well as the re-classification of cases, can occur throughout the year, making the data dynamic as amendments are made. The most updated data, which may not be consistent with what is included in this report, is available on the Virginia State Police website.
The overall crime rate in Arlington County, reported as Group A Offenses (defined on page 17 of the Annual Report), increased 11.0% in 2024 as compared to the previous year. NIBRS breaks down Group A Offenses by three categories: Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Society. Reported Crimes Against Persons increased 8.9% in 2024 from 2023 totals with the primary drivers being increases in simple and aggravated assault offenses. Reported Crimes Against Property increased 12.4%, compared to 2023, primarily driven by increases in shoplifting and online extortion offenses. Reported Crimes Against Society slightly increased 1.4% compared to 2023 totals. Group B Arrests, defined on page 17 of the Annual Report, increased by 8.6% compared to 2023 totals. A detailed summary of annual crime statistics begins on page 18 of the Annual Report.
